Training - How
To Stop Your Dog From Jumping On You And People
Authored
by: Jerry Yap

Dogs
that jump up on people are a pain. They can also be annoying and even
dangerous, especially to the elderly and the very young. A
dog
must not jump on people.
To get a handle
on the jumping problem, let’s first talk
about
why dogs jump on people. Dg that jumps into the air when it is near a
human are just an over excited animal. A dog that jumps up and places
her paws on a person (or vehicle) is trying to establish dominance.
Both situations are problems and must be corrected. The whole point of dog
training is to control the dog. A dog that is so excited that
it’s bouncing like a superball, will never listen to a
command.
Therefore, you, the handler, need to introduce and enforce appropriate
behavior.
Your goal is to
avoid the dirty paws, scratching and annoying of
visitors by an overly happy dog. What you need is patience and good
timing.
How
to stop your
dog from jumping on you
The rule is to
“catch the dog in the act” of
jumping and
correct it instantly. The correction is a raised knee that catches the
dog in the rib cage, right between and a bit behind the forelegs. The
raised knee must be supplied with sufficient force to only get the
dog’s attention but also to discourage future similar
behavior.
Do not over exert your strength doing this or you may end up hurting
your dog! The reason the knee trick works well is because the dog never
sees it coming. No command is issued. There is no training
session.
There is nothing you really have to teach. All the dog knows is
“I jumped at that person and something hit me in the chest
and
knocked me down.” The dog doesn’t know what hit him
so he
will decide to be more careful in repeating the jumping act.
However, there
are some cautions in using the knee act. This is not for
the timid. You cannot expect this to work if you back away from an
out-of-control dog. You got to step into the dog as he is coming up and
do not step back in fear. And do not overdo it. Just strike the dog
hard enough to tip him off balance. The slight thump is enough to
startle most dogs. It is not your intention to inflict any pain.
Thirdly, don’t do anything as a follow up action. The purpose
is
to let the dog believes that the very act of jumping brought about the
thump on the chest.
How
to stop your
dog from jumping on people when on leash?
What if your dog
jumps on other
people? If the dog is on
leash, it is much easier for you to control him. That leash gives you
total control, so use it. If you know your dog is a jumper, be prepared
when you approach someone. At the first sign that your dog is going to
jump, shorten the leash. You can usually tell the dog is going to lose
control by the frantic tail wagging and unruliness. As the
dog’s
paws come up, bend your knee and yank down on the leash as if you issue
a forceful verbal command “no”. To double the
impact, as
you shout “no” rise to your feet and tower over the
dog,
looking as stern as you can. Let the dog know that what he was trying
to do is wrong. Immediately command the dog to sit and allow no
movement.
How
to stop your
dog from jumping on people when he is off leash?
Without the
leash,
the handler has little control
over the
dog. You will use an open hand slap straight down on the top of the
dog’s snout. Do not use any punching, kicking or hitting with
any
kind of objects. Simply slap down on the dog’s nose as it
tries
to jump and issue a stern “no” command at the same
time.
Command the dog to sit. Do not call the dog to you for repeated
punishment. Once the dog is sitting and both of you have calmed down,
call the dog to your side and praised him as you normally do. What you
want your dog to know is that it was the jumping that drew the slap. No
jumping, no slap. Other than that, everything else he does is fine. Use
the slap technique only when your dog is off lease and jumps on people.
Do not use this method if your dog is on the lease or jump on you. Slap
technique is effective because it provides instant negative response to
the action you are trying to discourage.
As with any training,
consistency is the key to keeping dogs from
jumping up. I love dogs, but jumping is an act I cannot tolerate from
any dog. To stop it, you need to be firm and consistent.
